Project Internet Safety
An invite to a special group of educators, trainers, parents, and interested individuals
Dear reader,
I’ve taken this week off to give my arm a rest. My perennial typing crouch has resulted in a some repetitive stress injury type thing. While I rest up and figure out how to treat it, here’s an invitation to a WhatsApp group called ‘Internet Safety Project’.
As you know, a part of our mission is to stay safe and sane on the internet and off it. To do it well, we realize the need to partner with a number of individuals— in their personal or professional capacity.
Some of you might have had a strong reaction to the words ‘WhatsApp group’. The difference is that this is a group of like-minded people with a few simple guidelines:
No spam. (Talking about your work is obviously OK and encouraged. Asking questions is obviously encouraged.)
No jokes.
No ‘ad hominem’ comments. In other words, no critiquing a person. Instead, critique ideas.
To this, we add a zeroeth rule: Assume goodwill at all times.
(These guidelines are inspired by guidelines from Udhay Shankar N, founder of Silk, India’s oldest general-interest mailing list which survives and thrives to this day.)
If you would like to be part of this group, simply reply to this email saying so, and I will send you a link to join.
Regular service for this newsletter will resume next week.
Edit: I an earlier version of this post, I forgot to attribute Udhay Shankar N for these guidelines. It has since been updated.
