I’ve seen this happen to a couple of local papers here in Vermont: some long-running publications have shut down, and a couple of others temporarily went on hiatus or furloughed people for a while.
I made it a point to subscribe to my daily paper (The Times Argus) and kept supporting my local NPR affiliate, Vermont Public Radio. It’s definitely something I’ve talked up to friends in the region.
