I agree completely. 2008 marked the turning point as TV news in India shifted from sins of omission to sins of commission as you eloquently wrote. 2008 was also the year I left TV news in India though it was more out of personal reasons post-marriage and not out of an explicit plan to change course. Still, over my last year or so in India it was clear things were taking a turn for the worse. My last TV job in India in business news was partly a way to get out of 'general' news.
